Tongue Relaxation Exercise
Research shows when you relax your tongue on the floor of your mouth, your entire whole body relaxes.
When we’re anxious, our body enters a state of “fight, flight, or freeze”. It’s the body’s stress response to a perceived threat to survival; an automatic conditioned response. When the body reacts, the tongue becomes rigid and presses against the roof of the mouth.
By deliberately relaxing your tongue, it sends a signal to your autonomic nervous system that you are not under threat.
When you deliberately relax the tongue, you are signaling to your autonomic nervous system that the event is no longer a threat. The body will then quickly break free from the association of the stressful event.
The nerves that radiate out from your autonomic nervous system regulate every single major organ in your entire body. That’s why when we’re stressed, our entire body feels it (jaw, neck, shoulders) and when we release and relax, we feel relief.
When you mindfully relax your tongue while having a thought about something that upsets or angers you, you’ll begin to notice you’re no longer able to work up much emotional intensity around the event.
This exercise is a good stress reliever to use throughout the day. A heated phone conversation. Traffic jam. A difficult test. An argument with your partner. A challenging day at the office. Sleeplessness.
This simple energy technique can help you better regulate your emotions throughout the day and night.
