Does the Mind Create Pain to Deal With Pain?

Chronic pain can be a long road for those who suffer from it. I recently watched the awarding-winning documentary “All the Rage” that told the story of Dr. John Sarno and his mind-body approach to back pain. A beautiful heartwarming account of the filmmaker’s healing journey.

Dr. Sarno was a back pain expert who wrote several books and cured thousands by educating them on his theory that the mind creates pain to deal with pain. People deny their negative feelings and turn them inward against themselves and it can manifest as illness and chronic pain. Dr. Sarno was loved by his patients but dismissed by many of his peers.

Pain is crippling America. There’s a strong mindset in this country that the only way to deal with illness and disease is by treating it with drugs. In the film, patients shared their accounts of how healing their emotions cured their physical pain. Larry David and Howard Stern also shared their experience of Dr. Sarno’s miracle cure.

I was moved by the documentary and intend to read Dr. Sarno’s “Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection for my own quest for pain relief.  I suspect my arthritis has an emotional component to it.  More to come….
